High number of Arizona medical marijuana users in Mohave County

Active medical marijuana cardholders in Arizona have used about 3.4 metric tons of marijuana since April 2011, and Mohave County places among the highest concentrations of cardholders in the state, according to the latest Arizona Medical Marijuana Act Quarterly Report that was published by the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Under the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act, patients are allowed to possess 2.5 ounces of marijuana every two weeks. The report contains data on all active cardholders from April 14, 2011 to March 28, 2014.

There are 815 medical marijuana cardholders, or about 1.6 percent of cardholders in Arizona, in the Lake Havasu City Community Health Analysis Area, which is a community-based geographical area that is used for collecting health data, according to Laura Oxley, who is an ADHS public information officer.

Oxley said the Lake Havasu City CHAA has one medical marijuana dispensary, that being Havasu Green at 1691 Industrial Blvd.

As of the end of last month 2,381 Mohave County residents registered medical marijuana cardholders, according of ADHS staff. That’s about 5 percent of all medical marijuana cardholders in the state, they said.

The Kingman CHAA has between 634 and 946 cardholders while the Bullhead City CHAA has between 383 and 633 cardholders, according to the report.

The Phoenix metropolitan area has the highest concentration of cardholders in the state due to 10 CHAAs having between 947 and 1,496 cardholders.

Chronic pain accounts for the listed reason for need of more than 71 percent of patients, and more than 19 percent of patients suffer from two or more conditions.

Males make up about 70 percent of cardholders in the state. However, in the 81-years-old and over category, female patients outnumber male patients. Patients in the 18 to 30 year old category, made the most transaction of any age group, making more than 147,000 transactions out of more than 478,000.

The number of dispensaries is based on the number of pharmacies in the state, and the AMMA report shows 1,175 licensed employees or volunteers at Arizona medical marijuana dispensaries.

As of January 2012 the ADHS anticipated issuing 126 dispensary registration certificates. “That’s the most we can have under the law,” Oxley said. Adding that the current number is 78.

The Kingman Daily Miner contributed to this report.
