Hemp’s comeback in Kentucky is going strong, tall and green. A patch of hemp seeded at the University of Kentucky’s Spindletop research farm in Lexington in late May has grown to more than 6 feet in some places and is still going, with neither fertilizer nor pesticides. “It’s doing just fine so far,” said Dave Williams, a UK agronomist who, with Rich Mundell, is in charge of the test plots. “We’ve had enough rain to keep it growing and enough heat to make it grow,” Williams said.
The first legal hemp planted in Central Kentucky appears to be off to a good start despite being planted later than originally hoped. The seeds, imported from Italy, were seized by U.S. Customs officials in Louisville because the Kentucky Department of Agriculture did not have an import permit. Agriculture Commissioner James Comer sued the federal government to have them released.
The DEA agreed to expedite permits for the state and agreed that private growers also can be permitted by the department to grow cannabis sativa, which is almost identical to marijuana but with minuscule amounts of high-inducing chemicals. The federal suit will be dismissed soon, said Holly VonLuehrte, Comer’s chief of staff.
Further shipments have come in without difficulty, and now about 15 Kentucky farmers have planted test plots for the department, she said. Williams said his hemp, which includes a larger plot with 13 strains, all thought to be fiber varieties, will be harvested in late September or early October. The variety in the test plot that has become the poster child for Kentucky hemp is called red petiole and will be evaluated for how much fiber it yields.
This planting is just a first step for what many farmers across the state hope will become a lucrative crop. The KDA anticipates having at least 30 farmers growing hemp next year, VonLuehrte said. Williams plans to plant much more as well. “We’d like to test more varieties than what were available this year,” he said. “There are lots of different fertility regimes we’d like to look at, planting densities we’d like to look at. Lots of research yet to do.”
Other Kentucky universities also planted hemp this year — the first time it has been legally planted in the United States in decades. Murray State got seeds in the ground first, in mid-May. The same varieties at Spindletop also have been planted at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond and at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. Data from all the locations will be compared with the Fayette County trials.
Next comes finding a processor and a buyer. Some processors have expressed interest, Williams said. “We’re very excited about that,” he said. “If farmers can’t sell it, can’t pack it up in a truck, drive it somewhere and sell it, … And if it’s not worth more than whatever their lowest value crop is, …” Williams shrugged. “Really, establishing that market is key.” Decades ago, when hemp was a major crop in Kentucky, it was grown primarily for fiber, as it is today in Europe. But Canada’s hemp industry is built on seed, mainly processed for oil. Williams and Mundell hope next year to grow some varieties for seed rather than fiber. “This is just a baby step in the research that needs to be conducted before we can make great recommendations to farmers in Kentucky,” Williams said. “This is just the first step in the right direction.”

Rachael Garner, 33, fed her daughter Nettie Raenetta — who suffers with cerebral palsy and epilepsy — cannabis oil after she fell ill will pneumonia and doctors said she would die.
The mother of a toddler who was sent home from hospital to die claims her daughter is now making a miraculous recovery thanks to CANNABIS.
Mom Rachael Garner, 33, was told by doctors that her daughter Nettie Raenetta — who suffers with cerebral palsy and epilepsy — had just a few days to live after she fell ill with pneumonia.
But in a desperate act to save her daughter’s life, Rachael resorted to feeding her cannabis oil after reading articles and medical journals which described the controversial drug as a cure.
And to the astonishment of doctors, Rachael, a qualified pharmacy technician, claims the 19-month-old toddler has made a remarkable recovery just one month after she was told she would die.
Mom-of-four Rachael, from Pensacola, Fla., said: I was in such disbelief when doctors gave me the news that there was simply nothing left that they could do to save my daughter’s life.
The general consensus among the staff caring for her was that she should go home with hospice services to die peacefully.
I couldn’t believe it. They didn’t even give her a chance.
I knew cannabis had helped others and after doing some research myself, I was convinced that this treatment would not only be the best option, but the safest.
It was just days after I gave her the cannabis treatment that her color came back, it was like she woke up.
It made such a drastic change, the expression of happiness on her face was astounding.
Nettie was born with severe Hydrocephalus — a rare genetic brain disorder which caused her head to swell with massive water instead of brain tissue.
Remarkably, other than an underdeveloped brain, Nettie was born at full term and was otherwise a completely healthy new born.
However, Nettie’s lack of brain matter posed major health risks and within weeks she was stricken by a catalogue of major disorders including epilepsy, cerebral palsy, developmental delay and partial blindness and paralysis.
From that point, Nettie has suffered from five different types of violent seizures and at times has been totally dependent on a life support machine to keep her alive.

Many are putting forth effort to fight and change the laws but Nettie could not wait any longer.

The bill was named after Colorado girl, Charlotte Figi, 7, who suffers from a rare form of epilepsy called Dravet syndrome. Her parents are reported to be successfully treating her debilitating seizures with a strain of high-CBD, low-THC medical cannabis, called Charlotte’s web.

“Make the most of the Indian hemp seed; sow it everywhere!”
George Washington penned that line in a letter while serving as the first president and living in Philadelphia. For decades, farmers in the Keystone State did just that and there were scores of hemp mills across the Commonwealth.
But since the 1950s, with the expansion of criminal prohibitions on marijuana, somehow its cousin hemp was included into the mix. Now it is literally illegal to grow it here. All of the hemp clothing you see on store shelves today and hemp seeds in the grocery store come from Canada or Europe.
But this Saturday a new exposition for the plant is happening at Penn’s Landing’s Festival Pier: The Hemp Heals Festival.
Founded by former Philadelphia Flyer Riley Cote and headlined by some big name music acts — G-Love, Stephen Marley and crowd favorite Slightly Stoopid — the Hemp Heals show features a vending area for people to experience modern hemp products. (Full disclosure I will be emcee at the event.)
Shawn House will be on hand with his Hempzels. Nutritious, packed with protein and omega-3s, it also doesn’t get much more Pennsylvania than a hemp soft pretzel.
Hemp is in the family of cannabis but doesn’t produce any euphoric effects. Instead of short plants with big flower buds, hemp grows straight and tall. The stalks are hard like bamboo but not hollow. Instead, hemp stalks are filled with long fibers. It also produces thousands of edible seeds.
For much of the 1700s and 1800s, hemp was literally a required crop. During World War II, it was Pennsylvania that out-produced all other states in hemp production for military use. It was a crucial industrial product used mainly for stout rope.
Hemp could be returning to the fields of York and Lancaster Counties, where two townships – East Hempfield and West Hempfield, are named after it. Activists with the nonprofit Keystone Cannabis Coalition (KCC) have been negotiating with state legislators to introduce an industrial hemp farming bill in Harrisburg next year.
“We expect next year’s Pennsylvania hemp bill to gain widespread support and pass easily,” said Les Stark founder of the KCC, “We are going to put the Hemp back in Hempfield.”
The Hemp Heals event is now in its third year. I caught up with Riley Cote to ask him a few questions about what spurred his involvement and what the future may bring.
What was the inspiration for you to work on a foundation regarding hemp?
Cote: The Hemp Heals Foundation is about much more than just hemp. It’s supporting sustainable farming and sustainable health. The cannabis plant represents health in many forms. It is a healing plant, a nontoxic, sustainable industry that could be a safe alternative for virtually all things we do in the current world we live in. As an extremely health-conscious person, I have realized the power and potential of this plant and want nothing more than to educate people on its positive impact it has on not only the human body but all living things, the air we breathe and the ground we walk on. A perfect crop that grows in virtually all climates: Hemp heals!
If Pennsylvania starts farming hemp again, where do you think the greatest benefits would be found? Is it more the organic food market or in clothing, etc.?
Cote: If and when hemp is grown back here in Pennsylvania, I see huge things.
Hemp seeds are a nutrient-dense powerhouse with anti-inflammatory properties, packed with digestible protein, and all essential amino acids and essential fatty acids. Hemp fibers are the strongest and most durable natural fibers on earth. Hemp clothing is a great alternative to pesticide-ridden cotton fibers. Hemp body and hair-care products are nourishing and moisturizing. Hemp-crete and hemp board can be used to build negative carbon footprint housing while cutting costs by 40 percent. It can produce a clean, renewable biodiesel energy source while also being extracted into high CDB medicines, creams and tinctures. Hemp can help us all reconnect to the natural world while creating jobs and helping boost the economy.
At FarmAid in 2012 in Hershey, some of the presenters talked about hemp. Do you think there’s more awareness and support for support for hemp today out in rural PA as opposed to the urban centers like Philly?
Cote: I really do believe that the human race has become extremely disconnected with the natural world, and while most farmers see the total value in a crop like hemp, most people living in urban areas seem to really not be educated or care much. Hemp prohibition affects us all, whether we think is does or not.
What do you hope people take away after they attend a Hemp Heals show?
Cote: When people leave Hemp Heals, I hope they become just a little bit inspired and empowered to dig a little deeper, learn a little more, and hopefully see the ultimate power in this plant. Once more people become enlightened, the quicker we will see change.

Are you claiming to be one?
I have consulted with many medical professionals on the topic and have a degree in Chemistry and a minor in Nutrition. I have been exposed to a vast amount of scientific studies on the issue and have read many scientific journals to back it up. Peoples knowledge of health and nutrition are so misunderstood and bias; it’s unbelievable. Therefore, your comment is irrelevant to me.
I don’t have the energy to argue over a thread that has nothing to do with what the post was about.
Until you have experience with hemp oil from personal use and then want to comment (as the thread asked) then please, don’t act like you even know what you are talking about.

opium, hemp wick, and a oil burner bubble
You mean a glass pipe?
I’ve heard (citation needed, etc) this is too hot (?) for opium, and that hot-knifing or even using foil may have better results.
But I’ve never heard of anyone successfully vaping opium out of a glass pipe (if what I envision an “oil burner bubble” is correct?)
And not to be off topic, but my personal opinion is that orally consumed opium was always my preferred way of taking opiates. More than pharms, at any rate.
Smoking it is ok IME (I got best results adding it to weed – so not a good example, granted) but nothing comes close to the oral use of full spectrum alkaloids – for pain, addiction maintenance or anything (except kicks – because I don’t really want to encourage people to take opiates in search of ‘kicks’).
Just my 2 cents;
If I was still using, or needed pain relief – and I could source good opium, I’d take it orally. Just be careful, potency is hard to judge with anything of this nature.

Cuomo tries to make cannabis oil available for children suffering from rare disease

Gov. Andrew Cuomo sent a letter Wednesday to Acting State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker calling on the state Health Department to expedite the implementation of the Compassionate Care Act and make marijuana oil available for a specific subset of patients — children diagnosed with Dravet syndrome.
“Families with children struggling from epilepsy have fought for years for the passage of the Compassionate Care Act. Now that it is finally law, the children struggling with this condition deserve every consideration we can make that could potentially ease their pain and suffering,” Cuomo’s writes in his letter.
Dravet syndrome, also called severe myoclonic epilepsy of infancy, is an intractable seizure condition which causes seizures beginning in the first year of a child’s life. The seizures can be frequent and prolonged, and, in rare cases, can lead to status epilepticus — a persistent and potentially fatal brain seizure requiring immediate emergency care.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Web site, Dravet syndrome can impair language and motor skill development, depending on the frequency of the seizures, and cause hyperactivity. Teenagers and young adults with the condition are often reliant on parents or other health professionals for care.

The governor’s letter was prompted by the deaths of 9-year-old Anna Conte and 3-year-old Olivia Marie Newton – two western New York children who suffered from frequent seizures – earlier this month.
Cuomo urged Commissioner Zucker to act quickly and judiciously: “Striking the right balance to ensure public safety and public health are protected is crucial. That said, I ask that you review the eighteen month implementation timeline to determine if there is any way to accelerate the process for this specific dire population.”
Health Committee Chair Sen. Kemp Hannon, R-Garden City, applauded the governor for his action and echoed his call for expediency.
“I do not believe that we need to wait 18 months for the recently enacted medical marijuana statute nor should we,” Hannon said Wednesday. “Families with children suffering from Dravet syndrome tell me they see incredible relief from this oil. These families shouldn’t have to wait any longer.”
There is anecdotal evidence of the therapeutic benefits of marijuana oil with a high concentration of cannabidiol — a cannabinoid that does not produce the intoxicating effects of tetrahydrocannabinol, the primary psychoactive agency in marijuana — for patients with seizure conditions.
GW Pharmaceuticals, a company based in the UK whose “lead program is the development of a portfolio of cannabinoid prescription medicine,” according to their Web site, is currently developing a drug containing CBD called Epidiolex, a drug specifically meant to treat Dravet syndrome. The FDA has approved the drug for clinical trials. GW hopes that with more research CBD could be used to treat a wide spectrum of epilepsy disorders.
There is concern, however, that CBD oil may not be included in the acceptable forms of the drug permitted by medical marijuana legislation. In Februrary, Sen. Hannon sent letters to former Health Commissioner Dr. Nirav Shah in response to his remarks at Feb. 3 hearing where Shah indicated marijuana oil may not be part of the department’s implementation program.
“It is imperative that you include this oil among the allowable medical marijuana options available as you work to establish a limited medical marijuana option for New York State,” a Feb. 24 letter reads.
“The FDA has approved the study of CBD as an anti-seizure medication and, in fact, NYU has a clinical trial which is benefitting a small group of children. It is my understanding that CBD is a non-psychoactive component of marijuana and the high CBD oils actually contain very low levels of the psychoactive ingredient THC,” Hannon continues.
The Legislature passed the Compassionate Care Act on Jun. 20, the last day of the 2014 legislative session, and was signed by Cuomo on Jul. 5. This was not the first the state passed medical marijuana legislation however as a similar bill was drafted, passed and signed into law by former Gov. Hugh Carey in 1980. Called the Antonio G. Olivieri Controlled Substance Therapeutic Research Program, the bill allowed hospitals to prescribe marijuana to patients with cancer and glaucoma. The Carey administration never implemented the program.
Antonio Olivieri, for whom the bill is named, was the leading advocate for this legislation. A former assembly and New York City council from Manhattan, Olivieri lobbied strongly for the law as he was being treated for brain cancer at the time. He touted the nausea-relieving effects of marijuana and its ability to mitigate some of the harsher side effects of chemotherapy. He died in 1980 at age 39.
While the current health commissioner’s stance is unclear, Sen. Hannon continues to advocate the medical use of marijuana oil, a cause bolstered by the governor’s endorsement.
“I continue to believe CBD oil can legally be made available in New York under the existing authority, and I urge the Department of Health to do so as soon as possible,” Hannon said.

Tennessee University Plans Marijuana Use Impact Study
With support for the use of marijuana for medicinal and recreational purposes seemingly on the rise across the nation, researchers at the University of Memphis’ Department of Psychology are preparing a study on the impending result of its exploit.
The University of Memphis scored a sizeable research grant to the tune of $400,000 which they will use to examine the impact that marijuana use has on students attending the school.
The psychology associate professor heading up the two-year study, James Murphy, says he’s hopeful the results from his team’s research will help educate students regarding the risks involved with using marijuana.
Murphy explains that regular marijuana use also has negative aspects the user should take into consideration, pointing to “those things like legal difficulties, impairment in memory and learning.”
University researchers are concerned that if marijuana is legalized on a national basis, the federal government will need to contemplate amplifying funding for drug treatment programs in order to compensate for the increase in its use.
The University of Memphis says the purpose of said study is to help inform students about the impact of marijuana use before they have an opportunity to spark one up.
I think I’ve come up with a motto for their examination: “Learn before you burn.”

600 marijuana plants seized, 2 men arrested in Lake Los Angeles
More than 600 marijuana plants were seized at a Lake Los Angeles residence Wednesday, authorities said.
The plants were discovered inside a home and detached garage after Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant at the property near 240th Street East and Avenue K-8.
Two men, Jarrett Gregory, 27, of Huntington Beach and Steven Devlin, 34, of Oceanside, were arrested at the location.
Deputies also found a large amount of harvested marijuana, a shotgun and several thousand dollars in cash inside the residence, according to the sheriff’s department.
Gregory and Devlin were charged with marijuana cultivation and sales. A pit bull was given over to the animal control officials, as no one at the residence could care for it.
A search warrant for the residence was obtained after two deputies said they observed indicators of marijuana cultivation.

There is one aspect of America marijuana consumption that public health experts should consider good news. American marijuana consumers have a tradition of not mixing their marijuana with tobacco, unlike most other industrialized nations.

The 2014 Global Drug Survey found only 7 percent of American marijuana users who chose to take part in the survey said they smoke marijuana by mixing it with tobacco. By comparison in many European countries, like France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, it is over 80 percent. It is very common in other countries to mix tobacco in with marijuana when rolling joints. This survey does suffer the limitation of being a self nominating sample but it should provide a decent general idea of basic patterns.
Tobacco is more addictive than marijuana and more harmful to the lungs. In addition there is some research that indicates mixing them can created added issues. Studies indicate combining them might increase the chances of dependency for one, the other or both.
American policymakers who design the regulations around legal marijuana should focus on trying to maintain or even improve this relatively healthier habit. Fortunately it is easy to maintain cultural habits than break them or start new ones.
Already we are moving this direction. For example, Colorado’s rules specifically forbid marijuana retailers to sell or give away cigarettes or tobacco products.
As there is a growing acceptance that marijuana should be legalized more focus should be put on how to regulate in the best way possible.

Study: Legalized Medical Marijuana Doesn't Impact Teen Use Rates

The passage of state laws legalizing the physician-recommended possession and consumption of cannabis by qualified patients has not led to an increase in adolescents’ use of the plant, according to a working paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research – a non-partisan research organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Investigators from the University of Colorado at Denver, the University of Oregon, and Montana State University assessed federal data on youth marijuana use and treatment episodes for the years 1993 to 2011 – a time period when 16 states authorized medical cannabis use.
Authors reported, “Our results are not consistent with the hypothesis that the legalization of medical marijuana caused an increase in the use of marijuana among high school students. In fact, estimates from our preferred specification are small, consistently negative, and are never statistically distinguishable from zero.”
A separate analysis published in April in the Journal of Adolescent Health similarly determined, “This study did not find increases in adolescent marijuana use related to legalization of medical marijuana. … This suggests that concerns about ‘sending the wrong message’ may have been overblown.”

Green, 49, called the Daily News on Thursday to say that the flag replacement was actually the first part of what was to be a two-part strategy, with another set of banners going up later. But the increased NYPD surveillance on the bridge put a kibosh on a second switch.
“It was interesting that nobody knew what to make of it,” Green said. “It was interesting that people took it as a terror risk. We believe in nonviolent civil disobedience. The government has everybody scared s——s. Was Martin Luther King Jr. a terrorist? Was Abbie Hoffman a terrorist? The government is trying to silence people.”
Green, who’s based in Southern California, said he’s the founder of the POT Party — People Opposing Tyranny — which is pro-marijuana and anti-government.
He said “people in New York” contacted him after he posted a “Pledge of No Allegiance” anti-government screed on his website July 4.
The front page of the New York Daily News on July 23, one day after the swap. He came up with the idea of swapping out the American flags. Green said the men who actually did the job are “professionals” and that he doesn’t know their names.
“The people who contacted me are big Obama supporters and they’re disappointed in him. He fed the military-industrial complex,” Green said.
Green identified himself as a former producer for the “Jerry Springer Show” and a marijuana activist since the 1980s.
Asked to verify his involvement in the plot, he replied, “You look at my history and you’ll see I’m telling the truth. I didn’t personally do it, but it was my idea. I believe in being showy and being political. You have to make a spectacle of yourself.”
He also noted he is the only person who actually has claimed responsibility for the stunt.

He said the white flags were symbolic in several respects.
“It keeps people wondering what they were about. It stands for peace. It stands for surrender. It would make people think about what’s going in. Also the wars. Our solution to the wars is for people to smoke weed and chill out.”
The plan was to follow up the white flags at a later date with two more flags, a large green marijuana leaf on a white background and the words “Don’t Tread on Me” and a second banner with a General Electric logo covered with a Nazi swastika with bombs and guns in the background. He said he picked GE because it owns NBC and he wants to draw attention to large corporations owning the media.
“The government, the media, they control the flag and that flag is bull–t,” he said. “It doesn’t stand for freedom. It stands for tyranny.”
The placement of two bleached-white flags where two U.S. flags were supposed to be proudly waving above the bridge’s two 276-foot towers was front-page news.

Afterward, security was ramped-up at the bridge.
Some worried about what would happen if someone with more nefarious motives could climb the bridge so easily.
It was not the first terror scare on the iconic bridge over the East River.

Gun and a cannabis factory seized by policeA gun and a cannabis factory were found after armed police were called following reports of a fight.
Police were called to the scene in Hindes Road, Harrow, at 1.45am in the early hours of this morning to reports of a man with a gun in his waistband after a fight.
On route officers in Station Road were flagged down by a 19-year-old who said he had been threatened with a gun by another man.
Firearms officers and the Air Support Unit were called to the scene and the suspect was found in a flat in Hindes Road.
Police entered the flat and the gun was seized and a cannabis factory was also discovered in one of the rooms of the property.
A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and production of cannabis.

An “egocentric and obstinate” Dundee man caught growing cannabis in his flat was told to renounce his love of the drug or be sent to jail.
A court heard eight officers discovered the cannabis plants after raiding Steven Harper’s Lochee flat following a tip-off.
Harper, 29, admitted producing a controlled drug at his home in Burnside Court on February 13.
Gary McIlravey, defending, said: “He likes cannabis. He feels the law is wrong and he can’t say anymore than that.
“The plants were for his own use. He now has to mingle with drug dealers, so there’s a negative aspect to that.”
Sheriff Elizabeth Munro told Harper: “My first reaction to this was to send you to prison.
“Basically, you want to carry on as before? I don’t see why the rest of us should subsidise your cannabis habit.
“What you don’t realise is your cannabis habit has affected your brain. You are not thinking right at all.
“The social work report describes you as egocentric, obstinate and not likeable.”
Hunter interrupted from the dock, saying: “I’m not doing anything wrong, I’m just smoking weed.”
Sheriff Munro replied: ”You are painting me into a corner. Do some wider reading on the subject instead of just the articles that suit you by the time you come back here.
“But if you haven’t changed your mind, you are going to prison.”
Sentence was deferred until October 27.

Marijuana petition in Pryor
Pryor Times — Prohibition does not work.
This is the mantra of the Oklahoma Coalition Against Prohibition, which is circulating a petition to decriminalize medical marijuana.
The organization assisted another advocacy group who set up a petition table in Pryor last weekend.
“Our mission is to seek the improvement of quality of life of Oklahomans by seeking to end prohibition,” the OKCAP website says. “In Oklahoma cannabis prohibition has adversely impacted the quality of lives of Oklahomans; their freedom, the state’s agriculture, economic growth, family structure, employment opportunities, healthcare and generally many other aspects of normal life for a human being.”
The group first set up in Pryor at Rocklahoma, where 1,000 signatures were collected. The group does not have the total number collected from the stop outside Casey’s Vapors on Highway 69 in Pryor, but said they did very well there.
Statewide the group has collected about 100,000 signatures, according to OKCAP volunteer Shawn, with another 10,000-20,000 signatures that have been collected but have yet to be turned in.
“When someone walks up to our table, we ask them if they are a registered voter,” said Katherine, the OKCAP leader for Seminole County. “If they are not we provide voter registration forms for them to fill out, which we then take straight to the election board to turn in. Then we ask them if they know anything about medical marijuana, if they have done research and read case studies. Most people have heard about it because it’s a pretty hot button issue right now.
Shawn said the goal is to make an allowance in the state of Oklahoma for medicinal marijuana, with an accompanying identification card. Anyone arrested in possession of marijuana without a valid medical marijuana card would receive a ticket not to exceed $400.
“It’s not logical for this to carry jail time. We’d like to decriminalize it so it carries fines only,” said Shawn.
Shawn said according to OKCAP research, 70-80 percent of Oklahomans are in favor of the decriminalization of medical marijuana, but most are afraid to sign the petition.
“People want it but they are too afraid to ask for it. In small towns, fear of retaliation or fear of police harassment keep people from signing,” Shawn said. “But it just makes sense to decriminalize it, it will help a lot of people.”
The petition is still available to sign at Casey’s Vapors, Shawn said.
He said OKCAP is seeking permission to set up a petition table outside Walmart this weekend. After that, they hope to go to Tahlequah, then Locust Grove.
The last stop in Tahlequah gathered 100 signatures, while the OKCAP table at Tulsa’s Center of the Universe Festival gathered approximately 2,000. The lobbyists need a total of 155,216 valid petition signatures to get the measure on a ballot.
