(WLNS) – If you’re a voter in East Lansing you may see questions about marijuana on the ballot this November.
The “Coalition for a Safer East Lansing” says they have enough support and plan to turn in a petition to ease or eliminate local penalties for possessing small amounts of the drug.
This group is hoping to change the city of East Lansing’s current Code of Ordinances and allow adults ages 21 and up to carry, transfer and possess small amounts of marijuana.
But critics of the amendment say this could encourage young people to use the drug and could also lead to the usage of more dangerous drugs.
The initiative is seeking voter approval to enact section 6.12 entitled “Marijuana.”
Currently supporters are pointing to de-criminalization election wins in nine Michigan cities since 2010 , with one of those cities being Lansing. They say that’s evidence that voters want the laws against marijuana more lenient.
But opposers of the change say this could cause young people to suffer addiction and move to abuse dangerous drugs like heroin.
Today the Coalition for a Safer East Lansing will turn in their petition to the East Lansing clerk’s office at 3:30 p.m. This initiative could be an important step in placing the amendment on the November ballot.
