A Woolton couple caught growing cannabis in their home walked free from court.
Liverpool Crown Court heard that Steven Iddon and his wife, Amanda Iddon, were both heavy cannabis users and he started to grow the drug after running up a £2,000 debt to his dealers.
When police raided their home at The Stables, Woolton Road on February 17 this year they found an upstairs bedroom had been turned over to cannabis production.
Officers found 31 plants being cultivated with the use of transformers, lights, carbon filters and an air pump, with air being filtered into the loft.
Derek Jones, prosecuting, said: “The plants had a potential street value of up to £24,800.”
Two sets of scales, plastic bags and £1,500 cash was also found.
When interviewed Steven Iddon said they were both heavy cannabis users and his consumption had increased after being injured when a stolen car crashed into the taxi he was driving.
Iddon said that he had not worked since the crash.
He owed his drug dealer £2,000 and his intention was to give half to the dealer and keep half for himself.
Steven Iddon, 47, who has previous convictions, pleaded guilty to producing cannabis and possessing the drug. Amanda Iddon, 42, admitted permitting the premises to be used to cultivate cannabis.
He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment suspended for two years and placed under supervision for a year.
Judge David Aubrey, QC, warned him: “If you continue to use cannabis there is every likelihood you will serve that sentence.”
The judge placed Amanda Iddon under supervision for 12 months with attendance on a probation specified activities course.
