Drug dealer sentenced after police raid nets 3000 of cannabis

A drug dealer was given a suspended jail sentence after police raided his home and found nearly £3,000 worth of cannabis.

Nigel Paul Davies, 44, tried to convince police that the drugs were for his own personal use.

But at a hearing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court he pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis with intent to supply and further counts of possessing cocaine and diamorphine.

Jonathan Bushell, prosecuting, said police had raided his home at Bryntirion, Abercynon, on the evening of April 4.

They discovered a total of 283.92grammes of cannabis, with a street value of £2,840, and small amounts of other drugs.

Along with drugs paraphernalia police recovered £706.32 in cash, which Davies said had been saved up from his benefits and a loan.

He told officers in interview that he was a recovering heroin addict and had not taken it for years, but that three days earlier he had bought some after it was offered to him.

John Ryan, defending, said Davies, whose last criminal conviction was in 1996 but who has a caution for being concerned in the production of cannabis from last year, said he had been a cannabis addict since the age of 19.

Davies was given an eight-month jail sentence suspended for 12 months with supervision and an order to complete a specified activity requirement, and will have to pay a £100 victim surcharge.

A Proceeds of Crime hearing has been set for October 24.
