Illegal Marijuana Gardens

Housing about 300 plants in all, this greenhouse operation in Humboldt County tapped a tributary of Van Duzen River for its water source. Discovered by authorities last fall, the operation is typical of a backwoods indoor pot farm, officials said, with a smaller footprint than an outdoor garden, but far-reaching environmental impacts.

Illegally logged and scraped to bare soil, this 1.8-acre clearing north of Willits was discovered by authorities in Mendocino County in 2011. It had about 100 beds, or holes, prepared to grow marijuana. Its water source was an unpermitted diversion from a small stream feeding into Outlet Creek, a tributary of the Mendocino River. The landowner, who was ordered to reforest the eroding hillside, was fined $56,404 by the state on Friday. (Stormer Feiler, North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board)

An illegal clearcut and road push through steep terrain in Humboldt County, where pot plants watered by a diversion from a nearby stream stood ready for installation before their discovery by authorities in 2012. Diversions and runoff from such sites are hampering fish restoration efforts on the North Coast, officials say.

Filled by a stream diversion beyond the clearing, this 3-acre reservoir, discovered by authorities in 2012, was carved to hold hundreds of thousands of gallons of water for a Humboldt County pot garden.
