Maryland’s top prosecutors are appealing to the Governor to stop the decriminalization of marijuana. Members of Maryland’s Association of State’s Attorneys are sending a letter to the Governor asking him to veto the measure.
Before adjourning on Monday, lawmakers approved a bill which would decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Those charged with possession would face a civil penalty of up to $500, instead of 90 days in jail.
Baltimore County State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger insists the bill is flawed and could make it difficult to enforce.
According to Delegate Kurt Anderson, a proponent of the bill, “I don’t think we left anything out. The only thing we did was decriminalize the possession of a small amount of marijuana.”
Earlier this week, Governor Martin O’Malley indicated he would sign the bill. If the Governor signs it, the measure would become law on October 1.
