Medical marijuana career fair educates job seekers

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

As Clark County and the City of Las Vegas prepare to welcome the medical marijuana industry, Compassion Nevada Consulting is getting a jump-start on staffing the dispensaries and cultivation facilities that may start sprouting up.

The consulting firm hosted a medical marijuana career fair to educate and train job-seekers interested in the business.

Compassion Nevada Consulting owner Adam Sternberg said the medical marijuana industry will bring hundreds of jobs to the Valley. He wants to make sure those positions are filled by locals.

“We don’t want Coloradans and Washingtonians and these people coming from other states and taking these jobs,” Sternberg said. “We need to get Nevada’s workforce up to that level to where they are attractive to these employers.”

The firm’s programs prepare potential candidates for jobs in areas like human resources, business ownership, inspection, purchasing and supplying technician.

Demetria Hampton is interested in some of the positions. She also wants to become more educated on the industry to diminish the stigma attached to medical marijuana.

“Marijuana does have medicinal purposes,” Hampton said. “It can take away a lot of things and heal a lot of things when done the right way. I don’t think too many people know that.”

Sternberg is a cancer survivor and card-holder himself. While the job fair is open to everyone, he said he hopes the event provides employment opportunities and resources to other card-holders.

“Drug testing is prevalent in the workplace,” Sternberg said. “As a patient, it’s really a challenge to get these jobs. Now with the industry coming about, these medical marijuana patients can apply for a job and not be scrutinized.”

The job fair will be held Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Compassion Nevada Consulting, 2800 Highland Dr. Contact Adam Sternberg at (702) 410-5833.
