The attorney who was arrested here on drug charges last week is free on bail–and there is an order of protection against him filed by a Witt client who he was representing on drug charges.
Scott A. Hassebrock, 49, of Mascoutah, faces a Class 3 felony count of delivery of cannabis after he was arrested during a South Central Illinois Drug Task Force covert operation on Wednesday, April 9, for allegedly delivering a quarter pound of cannabis in the Witt area. The probation-eligible crime is punishable by a fine of up to $50,000 and 2-5 years in prison, according to Montgomery County State’s Attorney Chris Matoush.
Hassebrock was in Montgomery County circuit court Thursday morning, April 10, and was given 30 days to hire an attorney.
Court records also indicate that on Thursday morning an order of protection was filed against Hassebrock by a Witt woman who he is defending in two pending misdemeanor drug charges–posession of cannabis less than 2.5 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia–that were filed on Dec. 20, 2013. She last appeared in court with Hassebrock as her attorney just over two weeks ago on Tuesday, March 25, at which time a pretrial hearing was set for April 29.
Hassebrock also faces charges in St. Clair County, where evidence from the investigation here led drug authorities there to seize five pounds of cannabis at his residence in Mascoutah.
According to Sheriff Jim Vazzi, he was released from Montgomery County Jail on $12,000 cash bail Thursday morning–$2,000 for the Montgomery County charge and $10,000 for the St. Clair charges. His mother arrived with the bail money.
Vazzi said seizure notices have been filed to seize the vehicle used in the alleged delivery in Montgomery County, and St. Clair County has filed similar paperwork to seize his house in Mascoutah and another vehicle there.
