PRAHRAN has strengthened its coaching stocks by securing former leading County cricketer David Hemp as an assistant coach.
Hemp, 43, will work under new coach Peter Di Venuto, bringing to Toorak Park the experience of 271 first-class matches.
At the encouragement of True Blues spinner Bryce McGain, Hemp helped with Prahran’s match-day preparation in the final round against Northcote.
“I got a bit of a feel for the club and was made to feel very welcome,’’ he said.
Di Venuto is keen for him to captain the Second XI but Hemp said it depended on his work situation when the season started.
He relocated to Melbourne with his family five months ago and is trying to source other coaching roles.
Born in Bermuda to Welsh parents, Hemp played County cricket from 1991 to 2008, starting and finishing at Glamorgan but having five years at Warwickshire in between.
The left-hander built a fine record, hitting 15,520 runs at 37.04, with 30 centuries and 86 half-centuries.
He was selected for an England A tour to India and Bangladesh in 1994-95.
Towards the end of his career Hemp played for Bermuda at international level.
