Police seize $215000, synthetic cannabis from Fort McMurray apartment

Two people have been charged after police seized more than $215,000 and 2.3 kilograms of synthetic cannabis from a Fort McMurray apartment.

Wood Buffalo RCMP executed a warrant last Wednesday, finding the cash, OxyContin and a weapon. The synthetic cannabis was later identified by an expert from ALERT, a provincial law enforcement team comprised of RCMP, municipal police and sheriffs.

Cpl. George Cameron, an RCMP spokesman in Wood Buffalo, said the drug involves adding synthetic chemicals to herbs. It’s unusual but not unheard of, Cameron said. It is sometimes sold under brands like Spice or Izms.

“It is exactly how it states. It’s obviously made cannabis,” said Cameron. “It’s not your standard marijuana plant, crushed into dried leaves, however, it does look very similar to that. But it’s not in liquid form.”

Cameron called the cash seizure “substantial.”

Derek Twamley, 26, and Courtney Mul-Howard, 23, both from Fort McMurray are facing four drug charges and four firearms charges.

They were released and will next appear in Fort McMurray provincial court on April 22.
