An electrical fire at a central Fresno home that apparently was stealing power from a neighbor tipped authorities Wednesday to an indoor marijuana garden that may have as many as 1,000 plants, Fresno police said.
Sgt. Mike Smith said that weapons and children’s toys were also found in the home, in the 2300 block of East Dayton Avenue near Shields Avenue and Highway 41.
Around 5:10 p.m., the Fresno Fire Department responded to a report of fire at the home. Fire officials determined a fuse box in the backyard shorted out and caused a minor fire, which knocked out power to the home and one neighbor.
Firefighters called the Fresno Police Department and PG&E when they noticed the home had been stealing power. Firefighters also grew suspicious when they found a lot of fertilizer, propane tanks and lamps in the backyard.
Smith said that the propane tanks were used to make honey oil, a marijuana-infused extract. “We were lucky,” Smith said. “Typically, we find these honey oil factories after they have exploded.”
The home’s occupants are in custody and are cooperating with police. Smith said police will remove the plants and weapons once they obtain a search warrant.
