Police say 'scratch and sniff' to find cannabis farms

SCRATCH and sniff cards are being sent out to help members of the public find cannabis farms.

A Crimestoppers initiative, the charity is working alongside police forces using these cards to help tackle cannabis cultivation.

It is hoped the “scratch and sniff” cards will educate and inform the public of the signs to spot and the specific smell of cannabis when it is growing.

Dyfed-Powys Police Detective Chief Inspector Dave Guiney said: “Cannabis cultivation is seen by criminals as a low risk, high profit industry.

“Some see it as a lower level drug, but cannabis production is a serious offence and offenders will be brought to justice.

“We are pleased to support the Crimestoppers campaign to raise the public awareness of the signs to look out for and the specific smell of cannabis when it is growing.”

When criminal gangs grow cannabis they often rent residential properties such as flats or suburban houses.

However, the police believe a farm may bring with it serious crime, including gun crime, theft and human trafficking.

It is believed that there is clear evidence of serious and organised criminal groups using cannabis cultivation as a means to further their criminal activity.

Crimestoppers is asking members of the public to pass on any information about cannabis farms anonymously by telephoning 0800 555 111 or via the Anonymous Online Form via www.crimestoppers-uk.org
