Olney City Concil approves potentional step toward cannabis facility

Olney City Council approved an ordinance at a special meeting Wednesday afternoon that takes an initial step toward potentially having a medical cannabis cultivation facility and processing plant on Shipley Road.

The council, after hearing audience comments from those attending the crowded meeting, unanimously authorized the execution of a development agreement with Delta 9 Global or related party and execution of a warranty deed for 17.36 acres on Shipley Road. According to the ordinance, the agreement is with Compassionate Medicine LLC. Richland County Development Corporation Executive Director Courtney Yockey has stated that Delta 9 Global is the parent company.

The facility will still have to receive a state license through the Illinois Department of Agriculture in order to operate.

According to City Manager Larry Taylor, said that according to the development agreement, the facility would have 40 full-time jobs in its first year, with a minimum of 60 full-time positions in its second through fifth years.

Councilman Brad Brown was not in attendance.
