Industrial hemp's potential for Missouri economy revived

Industrial hemp once again has become fodder for moneymaking enterprises state lawmakers may consider this year.

State Rep. Galen Higdon, R-St. Joseph, is co-sponsoring a House bill that would exempt industrial hemp from Missouri’s list of controlled substances. It also would make it legal for anyone who has not been convicted of a drug-related crime to cultivate hemp. Similar legislation was unsuccessfully presented in both the 2013 and 2011 legislative sessions, and has been under periodic review in the statehouse back to at least 1996.
