Senate Approves Medical Marijuana Legislation in Maryland - The 420 Times

Legislation that would permit individuals suffering with debilitating diseases to access marijuana for medical dedications via a recommendation from their primary care physician has been approved by the Maryland Senate.

Senate Bill 923, which was introduced by Senator Jamie Raskin and co-sponsored by 12 additional senators, advanced by an impressive margin of 45 to 1.

“The Senate should be commended for bringing Maryland patients one step closer to finding real relief with medical marijuana,” avowed the legislative analyst for the Marijuana Policy Project, Rachelle Yeung. “Marijuana has been proven to help treat a variety of medical conditions, and seriously ill Marylanders should not have to fear arrest or risk their safety to obtain the medicine that works for them. We are hopeful that the House will agree with them, and we can finally begin to implement an effective medical marijuana program.”

If the bill is indeed successful, limits regarding possession and regulations governing cultivation and dispensary facilities would be determined by state officials preceding its execution.

House Bill 881, a companion bill to Senate Bill 923, was approved crushingly by the House earlier this year and is in anticipation of consideration by the Senate.

A total of 72 percent of Maryland voters are in support of permitting patients suffering with serious illnesses to access marijuana for medicinal purposes if their doctors propose its use, according to a survey conducted by Public Policy Polling back in September 2013.
