Recent articles promote the idea of marijuana being used as a cancer treatment.
This is a valid idea as the cannabinoids (the active ingredients of cannabis) have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects — they induce death of cancer cells. There will be no investigation into this from the big pharmaceutical companies, since there will be no money in it for them.
Cannabis is cheap, grows like a weed and probably can’t be patented. Trials on animals and then people, are very expensive, so Bigpharma devotes all its time to developing “Mabs” and “Nibs” to treat cancer. These cost a fortune and are protected by 10 year patents, so that all the shareholders are rejoicing as the money rolls in.
They aren’t all that successful either— you often read heart-rending stories of melanoma sufferers who can’t afford the huge amounts of money required, so a public fund is set up (by the media, but they don’t contribute). They may extend a life by 3 to 6 months – all with horrendous side-effects – but it is a great story for the media and the publicity is good for Bigpharma.
Doctors and cancer specialists are financed by Bigpharma to attend seminars on their latest “life-saving” drug, usually in Vanuatu, Hawaii or the Swiss alps. The “life-saving” drug is then heavily promoted (only favourable reviews, of course, from all those doctors when they return from their vacation—sorry — seminar).
Unfavourable reviews are never mentioned
I believe Cannabis and its extracts would have a better effect on cancer than all the overpriced drugs from Bigpharma, particularly when you take the placebo effect into consideration.
Smoking pot is not so good (lung cancer is a possibility), but the old cannabis extracts and tinctures could be marketed, and made into recipes. I see that in Colorado they now have hash cookies, hash chocolate and hash marmalade.
At least, even if this doesn’t work all the time, people will be a lot happier as they nibble on a hash chocolate.
