PRESCOTT — The Yavapai County Attorney’s Office has decided against charging motorist Nelson Shaum in the death of Lynn Hartline, the 48-year-old Gilbert bicyclist who was an entrant in the MS Ride the Vortex bicycle run in the Verde Valley May 17.

Yavapai County Chief Deputy Attorney Dennis McGrane said the office is declining prosecution. While this is a tragic event, McGrane said, “It all boils down to the inability to prove this is more than an accident” and to prove the defendant had the necessary criminal state of mind.

Vacation rentals issue shakes up Jerome council

Jerome voters decisively struck down a vacation rentals ordinance by a 3-1 margin Tuesday, according to unofficial Yavapai County election results.

Town Manager Candace Gallagher said despite how preliminary numbers look, the council race is far from decided.

“Things are still up in the air,” Gallagher said. “We’ll have a better idea in a couple of days, but we really can’t say right now.”

The “complicated” process, she said, starts with dividing the number of ballots cast by the number of council seats. To be elected straight out of the primary, a candidate would need to earn 50 percent of that number, plus one.

Yavapai College, Sedona Cultural Park finalize agreement

SEDONA — Yavapai College and Sathcupa L.L.C., owner of the Sedona Cultural Park, have completed a land-swap agreement that allows the college to stay in its Sedona Center for Arts & Technology facility located in the Cultural Park.

Papers filed with the City of Sedona and Yavapai County show that the two parties traded land parcels within the Cultural Park. The college received property contiguous to its facility in exchange for five acres the college owned elsewhere in the Cultural Park. The contiguous property is needed for student parking and direct access to the main thoroughfare, Highway 89A. The College plans to spend about $1.5 million to complete the agreement and add the needed parking and access road. Work is scheduled to start later this fall.

Hazards of helicopter rotor wash raise concerns at Montezuma Castle

CAMP VERDE – A view of the ruins at Montezuma Castle from the air sounds like a great tour – but only if the flight keeps its distance.

Park Superintendent Dorothy FireCloud had concerns when she first saw advertisements for helicopter flights to take tourists over the national park she oversees. Those concerns seemed to play out subsequently as rangers reported flights coming too close to the ancient cliff dwellings.

The proximity of a hovering helicopter brings up issues of rotor wash and rotor vortices, neither of which are welcome around fragile ruins. Rotor wash (or downwash) is high-velocity air under the helicopter that is more intense closer to the ground. The turbulence can then spread out to the sides of the helicopter.
