Some cops can tell the difference between a driver high on life and one that’s been smoking the reefer — but how?
Officers that go through the nationwide Drug Recognition Expert program become experts in catching drivers during and after traffic stops that have been using drugs such as marijuana, according to the Oregonian newspaper.
Oregon State Police Sgt. Michael Iwai said officers look for obvious symptoms such as bloodshot eyes and the “typical Beavis and Butthead laugh,” but they also use a little good ol’ fashioned police work.
The driver may have been speeding or swerving, but a broken taillight is a common reason for making a stop, Iwai said. From there, they look for signs of marijuana consumption.
It may be the piles of candy bar wrappers sitting on the floor of the car that give away the driver suffering from a bad case of the munchies or their nervous chortle, he added.

But officers also look for “slightly protruding veins on the person’s neck,” the Oregonian wrote.
If the driver is arrested after a sobriety test, one of their the officers trained in drug recognition will take a look at the suspect and follow a 12-step protocol detailed by the International Drug Evaluation and Classification Program.
