Applications to sell marijuana now being accepted in WA - KPTV - FOX 12

OLYMPIA, WA (KPTV) -

Monday marked the first day to apply to sell marijuana in the state of Washington.

Voters passed Initiative 502 last year, legalizing the production and sale of small amounts of pot to anyone over the age of 21.

There is a $250 application fee, along with $19 for processing. Applications will then go to the Washington State Liquor Board for approval.

Retailer applications will be selected in a lottery. But that is not sitting well with a medical marijuana dispensary owner in the Seattle area who feels he should have a leg up.

“I mean, how would you feel if you were a pioneer of the industry and any Joe Blow now can find an address and get into the industry,” said Shy Sadis. “It’s just not right. It’s not ethical.”

In Vancouver, the City Council voted 6 to 1 to move forward with its current moratorium on the licensing of retail marijuana stores. That means while potential sellers in Vancouver can still apply with the state, they will have to wait until at least June 30 of next year to get a permit for a store in the city.
