According to multiple news outlets, former University of Louisville power forward Chane Behanan was cited in Louisville last night for possession of marijuana. Just the latest in what seems to be an incredibly long list of horrible decision-making, Behanan was in town to visit friends and his old teammates this week. He even popped by the ESPN 680 studios for an impromptu interview and made it sound like everything was great while rehabbing in Houston. However, at this point, you have to think what’s going on between his ears has reached a critical level. He was scheduled to join the Colorado State basketball team in June, but that looks like it could be in serious jeopardy. A trip to the D-League or overseas seems like it would be his best-case destination now.
On one hand, I feel extremely bad for the kid. He’s obviously troubled and has some demons that he simply can’t shake. We know the story of his upbringing and it certainly has stuck with him as he’s made poor decision after poor decision. On the other hand, at what point do you step back, look at your life and examine the situation to realize that you’re pissing an extremely rare gift away? How many people have his athleticism, talent and opportunities? Since going to Houston to rehab under the tutelage of John Lucas, Behanan has spoken about his regrets and willingness to change for the better. Yet here we are, back at square one with another disappointment from a disappointing young man.
