YMCA logoIt wasn’t fun to be at the YMCA in Cambridge when police raided it twice, seizing ketamine and cannabis.
Officers in the east of the city have mounted more than 10 raids in recent weeks targeting drugs – and continue to focus on dealers from London.
Two cannabis factories have also been uncovered and officers have stopped street pushers after the city council’s east area committee called on the force to tackle narcotics as a priority.
The drugs were seized in two raids on the YMCA in Gonville Place – which has a strict no drugs policy – and two arrests were made resulting in one person being charged with possession. Both have now been evicted, police said.
Insp Steve Poppitt said police are working with the council to evict dealers.
He added: “There have been fewer complaints and information is being received about drug use across the area. There are, however, a number of areas which still suffer from both drug dealing and the effects of drug use.
“In previous reports London drug dealers have been of concern. Although not in the same numbers as previously experienced, we continue to find and deal robustly with dealers arriving from London.”
Insp Poppitt said two raids also took place in Whitehill Road after concerns were raised by residents in a report to the committee.
No drugs were recovered but the officer said both properties showed “clear signs of heavy” Class A drug use.
In Wadloes Road a man was arrested after with 12 grammes of ketamine and two people with him had cannabis and were given cautions.
A “large” haul of ketamine and some ecstasy were seized in a raid in Stourbridge Grove and an arrest made.
In Molewood Close, police found Class B drugs and a “large amount of meat”, believed to have been stolen from shops.
Cannabis factories were found in Brooks Road and Jack Warren Green. Several arrests were made.
Meanwhile, in Gresham Road an arrest was made for intent to supply Class B drugs and in Ferndale Rise “large amounts” of drugs and cash were seized by police.
