A cannabis user has been jailed after he grew his own supply in the bedroom of his Bideford home.

Gardener Andrew Bannister was already subject of a suspended sentence for an identical offence when his home was raided by police and he was found with eight plants.

He has a record of drug offences and was jailed after a judge at Exeter Crown Court activated the suspended sentence and added a month for the new offence.

Bannister, aged 49, of Allhalland Road, Bideford, admitted production of cannabis and was jailed for a total of two months by Judge Phillip Wassall.

The Judge told him he had not learned the lesson from his previous offending or been deterred by his suspended sentence.

Mr David Bowen, prosecuting, said police searched Bannister’s home on December 11 last year and found the plants.

He said:”The officers executed a warrant at the address and found eight cannabis plants in a bedroom. At the time he was nearly at the end of a suspended sentence for a similar offence.

“When he was interviewed by police he admitted cultivating the plants for his personal use.”

Mr Sean Brunton, defending, said Bannister should be given credit for pleading guilty at an early stage and stressed there was no question of him growing the drugs to sell or for profit.

Bannister is a horticulturalist who has previously been employed on a community scheme at the RHS gardens in Rosemoor, North Devon.
