2008: The Ministry of Agriculture’s seismology department has announced that during the period January – March 2008, a total of 37 small earthquakes shook Cyprus and the seas around the island.

Most of the shakes were too small to be noticed and ranged up to level 3 on the Richter scale.

2008: Cyprus shoppers should brace themselves for yet another price hike. It is now reported that the cost of bread and bakery products will increase from next week. This latest price rise is expected after the cost of wheat on international markets shot up due to increased demand from Asia and India.

2009:
Police have discovered over 300 cannabis trees in a villa turned greenhouse in Protaras. The cannabis plants were 80 centimetres high, in pots, with heating, lighting, ventilation and temperature measurement systems. The house windows were airtight, to keep in the smell of the plants.

2009: Police have announced a series of measures to cope with a recent spate of robberies, mainly of small bank offices, bakeries and convenience stores staying open late at night. The measures were decided upon at a meeting of senior officers at the Police Headquarters in Nicosia.

2012: The Bank of Cyprus announced that its losses after tax amounted to 1.371 bln euros for 2011, following the impairment of Greek Government Bonds by 74%, according to the Bank’s final audited financial results.

2013:
MINISTER of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides has told British MPs of the disappointment and bitterness felt by Cyprus towards the EU. He said Cypriot government could neither have predicted the way that Cyprus was treated by its European partners, nor the unprecedented decision of the Eurogroup to impose a haircut on deposits.

Kasoulides noted that “this treatment of a fellow EU partner, which can hardly be described as solidarity, has left us with a feeling of disappointment and bitterness.”
