Foot chase leads police to marijuana operation

Dayton police chasing an armed suspect Saturday afternoon stumbled on a marijuana grow operation.

Dayton officers were assisting Montgomery Sheriff’s deputies around 3 p.m. in the pursuit of 24-year-old Dameko Barber. Barber was wanted for a felony and was involved in a high-speed chase that ended when he crashed into the back of a Boyer Street house. Barber, who was armed, then fled on foot. Dayton police tracked Barber through the backyard of a Home Avenue residence and later nabbed him on South Euclid Avenue. He didn’t have a gun but did have bullets in his pocket, Dayton police said.

Police were in the backyard of a home in the 1500 block of Home Avenue. The fence was broken during the foot chase, and a cellphone was near the home’s rear door. A man, identified as Gary Gilkey II, spoke to officers through the door without being asked anything. He stated: There’s his phone, but I don’t know nothing about a gun,” according to the report.

In the front of the home, Gilkey’s wife allowed police to search her home for the missing gun. No weapon was found, but officers did report a strong smell of raw marijuana and a marijuana grow operation in plain sight, according to the report.

Gilkey allegedly admitted to police the marijuana operation was his hobby that he started in September. Police confiscated three adult and two juvenile marijuana plants, some small bags of marijuana, a few heat lamps of various sizes, exhaust fan, air filter and small digital scales. The marijuana combined weighted 2 pounds, according to the report.

Gilkey was issued a court summons on a charge of possession of marijuana.
