Man sentenced to probation in cannabis-by-mail case

URBANA — An Urbana man who admitted he received several pounds of cannabis through the mail with the intention of reselling it has been sentenced to 30 months of probation.

Jerry L. Butler, 28, who listed an address in the 100 block of Scottswood Drive, pleaded guilty before Judge Tom Difanis to possession with intent to deliver cannabis.

Butler admitted that on Dec. 18, he had about 4 pounds of cannabis in his possession that he had picked up at the Urbana post office. The package was addressed to a woman living at the same address as Butler.

Postal inspectors were aware of the cannabis in the package prior to Butler picking it up. They notified Champaign County sheriff’s investigators, who stopped Butler as he left the post office on Tatman Court.

In addition to the probation sentence, Butler was ordered to pay more than $15,600 in fines and costs.
