News briefs: CNN series 'High Profits' to feature Breckenridge Cannabis Club

Yesterday the Summit Daily News learned that some of the news boxes it uses to deliver its daily work and some newspapers were used without permission in a manner that constitutes vandalism and theft.

As we all know, Election Day is Tuesday. With the race to “get the word out,” some ill-advised person or persons decided to affix stickers attacking one candidate on the outside and inside of newspaper boxes in Frisco and Breckenridge on Saturday morning.

Plain and simple, this is vandalism. Defacing private property is a crime and one that will be pursued accordingly. Stickers were even placed onto and inside of some copies of Saturday’s edition of the paper. As a free-distribution newspaper we rely on the great customers we have throughout Summit County who pay for their messages to be seen by the many people who pick up the paper every day.  We thank those in the community who support us in this manner; however, for the individual who abused this means of advertising, we see your actions as theft.

It takes hard work and dedication to publish a newspaper about our community each day. It is a labor of love that each of us at the Summit Daily take on with pride.  We are committed to sharing the stories of Summit County for the betterment of everyone who chooses to call this wonderful place home, even those who do so temporarily. We ask that as we encounter disagreements with others over differing views and beliefs — whether now during election season or at any other time — we all take the high road. Listen to what others have to say, engage in civil debate and simply treat others with the same respect and dignity that you would expect in return.

Dillon, DBA send local businesses to boot camp

Recently the town of Dillon partnered with the Dillon Business Association to send five local businesses to Destination Boot Camp in Longmont, Colorado. The businesses include Avalanche Communications, the Arapahoe Café, Bonnie Q BBQ, Summit Extreme Baseball and the Dillon Marina. The boot camp teaches strategies local businesses can use to more effectively market their businesses and attract more customers, both locally and nationally.

“We are committed to our businesses and want to do everything we can to facilitate growth in our town”, Mayor Kevin Burns said in a written statement.

This is the third time the town has been able to work with its businesses and help them to attend.

“It’s been a focus of ours to help revitalize Dillon as a whole and feel if we give our businesses the tools to succeed then we are all moving in the right direction”, Burns said.

The two-and-a-half-day “Destination Boot Camp,” created and led by marketing consultant Jon Schallert, teaches independent business owners how to reposition their businesses as “consumer destinations.” According to Schallert, a business using his 14-step Destination Business process can compete effectively with superstores like Walmart and Home Depot, and significantly impact a local community.

Breckenridge police turn to social media for traffic enforcement

The Breckenridge Police Department this week announced a new traffic-enforcement initiative using social media alerts. Beginning Nov.10, police will begin announcing regularly scheduled traffic enforcement locations on social media outlets.

For example, if on Nov. 20, between 8 and 9 a.m., Breckenridge officers will be working speed enforcement on Highway 9 between Valley Brook Road and Tiger Road, the department will announce that fact on social media.

“By announcing each day where and when officers are scheduled to work traffic enforcement, our hope is that drivers will be cognizant of their driving habits and voluntarily comply with traffic laws,” the department wrote in a news release.

Please be aware that officers may enforce traffic laws at unannounced locations and times while they are involved in random patrol.

If you are interested in receiving daily announcements regarding traffic enforcement times and locations within town limits, subscribe to the department’s Facebook page at Town of Breckenridge Police Department (www.facebook.com/breckpolice) and their Twitter account @BreckPolice.
