Marijuana legalization may be drawing new residents to Washington, Colorado

Would you move here for this? Photo: In celebration of ”4/20 Eve,” guests take dab hits at the third annual DOPE Cup, which featured a host live music, table games and performers Saturday, April 19, 2014, at Magical Butter Studios in Seattle, Wash. (Jordan Stead, seattlepi.com)

Let’s say you live in a state where possession of even small amounts of marijuana can land you jail … Seems strange to us, even though it’s been less than two years since the passage of I-502. You know, right now, there’s more than a dozen people/companies with state-issed licenses to grow marijuana!

Well, if you want to use marijuana recreationally or medically and not have to sweat it, you might think of moving to a place where it’s legal, right? And that appears to be exactly what’s happening, according to data crunched by Apartment Guide, an online resource for finding apartments.

The guide writes in its blog:

As the economy picks up and moving season creeps up on us, Americans are on the move … but to where? Plenty of new apartments are being built in South Carolina, Alabama and Massachusetts, while Washington, D.C., New York and Texas have the most entry-level job openings.

But our data tells us renters are flocking to two other states, best known for their mountains, their football teams and, well, their laws regarding, ahem, certain herbs.

Essentially, it appears people are looking at and making calls on rentals here and Colorado at a higher rate than anywhere in the nation.
