Marijuana dispensary eyes site File petition to lease Mooney St. land ...

The operators of a medical marijuana dispensary are looking for a location in the Fresh Pond neighborhood and have submitted a petition to include a property in the marijuana overlay district.

Greeneway Wellness Foundation founder and CEO John Greene submitted a petition and a letter of intent to the City Council in order to lease the property at 61 Mooney St. to use for a dispensary. However, the property is two-tenths of a mile outside the Miedical Marijuana District Overly adopted by the council last December.

Greene has sought the support of neighbors and nearby residents of Mooney Street to sign his petition to include the property in the overlay. So far, he’s garnered 26 signatures for the citizen’s petition.

“Throughout the last month, we have knocked on doors, made phone calls and spoken at forums to introduce ourselves to the surrounding community, share our purpose and vision, and address any concerns,” said Greene in an email to The Chronicle. “The response has been so supportive that we were able to submit a citizen’s petition signed by 26 households for zoning relief.”

The site at 61 Mooney St. is located at the end of an industrial zone and was previously home to a pharmaceutical production plant. It is just over a mile away from the Alewife T Station. The proposed location is more than 500 feet away from any facility where children commonly congregate, a stipulation outlined by the Department of Public Health.

Greeneway Wellness Foundation first applied to operate at 11 First St., which stirred up backlash from residents in the area. Due to the response, Greene announced he would no longer be looking in the area.

Now Greene believes many residents in the community are on his side and said he is welcoming the opportunity to tour the site with councilors, city officials or other residents.
