Victory! House Votes to End War on Medical Marijuana

We’re one step closer to ending the federal war on medical marijuana.

In a vote late last night, the House of Representative approved Rep. Rohrabacher’s amendment to stop federal law enforcement resources from being used against state-sanctioned medical marijuana programs.

Thousands of Just Say Now activists signed our petition and made calls to their congressmen in support of this amendment that could finally bring a measure of order and security to patients and caregivers in legal medical marijuana states, and we thank you all for your support and participation in this significant victory.

The bill carrying this important amendment now awaits a vote in the Senate. Majority leader Sen. Harry Reid has grown more receptive to medical marijuana reforms in recent years, which means there’s a good chance that with pressure from advocates like you, the Senate could approve this, too.

This is a particularly significant occasion because we’re finally seeing some change on the federal level. For years, a growing number of states across America have begun to adopt marijuana reforms, but the federal government has maintained a stubbornly prohibitionist stance for decades.

A similar amendment to this one failed to pass the House in 2012, six months before Colorado cast more votes to legalize marijuana than to elect President Obama. It now appears that support for ending the federal war on marijuana is finally beginning to reach the halls of Congress.
