Madera County narcotics agents found nearly 2,000 cannabis plants and a source of potential water contamination on Thursday at an illegal marijuana growing site in Trigo, a rural section of Madera County near Avenue 11 and Road 32.
If the agents had not discovered the operation, the growers could have contaminated the groundwater and put neighboring homes at risk, health officials said.
The growers, who were not present when agents served a search warrant, were hydrating the marijuana plants and an orchard of vegetables with wastewater. Agents found pools of contaminated water, which code enforcement officials said could have eventually contaminated nearby water.
