Evelyn Volante.

A Jersey woman suffering from severe bowel disease is asking the States to help issue her a license for possession of cannabis.

Evelyn Volante had her colon and large intestine removed because of her condition, and has to take what she calls ‘addictive’ prescription medication.

She says smoking the Class B drug relieves her painful muscle spasms and helps with her diminishing appetite.

Jersey’s States are being challenged to make a landmark decision on licensing the use of cannabis for the treatment of chronic pain.

Deputy Montford Tadier wants the Health Minister to issue a licence to Evelyn Volante who suffers from ulcerative colitis. She has had her colon, her large intestine and part of her small intestine removed.

Deputy Tadier’s proposition is as follows:

“The States are asked to decide whether they are of opinion to request the Minister for Health and Social Services to issue a licence to Ms. Evelyn Mary Rose Volante for the possession of cannabis for the treatment and relief of her pain and other symptoms in accordance with the Minister’s discretionary powers under the Misuse of Drugs (General Provisions) (Jersey) Order 2009.”

If you look up the benefits of cannabis on many illnesses , it should never been made illegal in the first place.

This is one way to start a dope smoking precedent I suppose.

There should not need to go to the States, The Health Minister is empowered to issue such a license she should not need to be told what to do….

It is such a shame that it comes to this, politicians having to request other politicians to allow a patient suffering from chronic pain to be allowed to use a substance that makes her life more bearable. I only hope that one day any politician who oposes this has the oportunity to feel the same chronic pain and then has people opose their pain relief. I feel in cases like this it is only when it affects them that some people will act to make changes to laws but when it is someone else they couldn’t care less, or in the worse case wont turn up for the vote incase their response affects their election chances. A really sad state of affairs that we find ourselves in in this day and age due to some old set in their ways dinosaurs that wont open up their minds to the information already out there. If the health minister already has this power then she should be utterly ashamed of herself for not having granted a license already.
