GOLDEN, Colo. – FEE will be holding a debate on marijuana legalization before a live audience of college students at the Colorado School of Mines on July 16 at 10:45 a.m. MDT, featuring both Judge James P. Gray, former running mate of Gary Johnson, and former Obama Administration senior advisor Kevin Sabet. This debate will be broadcast live here.
Gray, representing Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP) and taking the affirmative, will be debating Kevin Sabet, Director of the Drug Policy Institute. The debate is anticipated to last 45 minutes with time for questions and answers. Media interested in attending should contact FEE’s College Programs Manager, Jason Riddle, at jriddle@fee.org for directions to the event.
“If we were truly serious about fighting terrorism, we would kill the ‘Golden Goose’ of terrorism: drug prohibition,”according to Gray, who served 20 years on the Superior Court of Orange County, California.
Sabet, author of “Reefer Sanity: Seven Great Myths About Marijuana,” will be arguing that marijuana legalization poses a number of consequences, such as health risks and the marketing of the drug to youth.
“Our greatest concern should be the inevitable rise of a second Big Tobacco industry, this time marketing marijuana to our children and youth,” according to Sabet, who served in the Obama Administration as Senior Advisor at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
FEE anticipates a live audience of over fifty students from at least ten different countries and an exciting number of online viewers.
The event is part of FEE’s series of live online debates, “Arena K.O. debates,” available for viewing anywhere in the world. These one-hour debates feature experts on a variety of topics–from immigration to the role of government in the arts, and will be broadcast live in front of student audiences at each of FEE’s 10 Summer Seminars. These debates are supported by the generosity of the Arthur N. Rupe Foundation.
FEE will also be hosting “Should We Welcome Open Borders?” between Jason Brennan, assistant professor at Georgetown University, and David Inserra, research associate of The Heritage Foundation on Sunday, July 20 between 10:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. MDT at the Colorado School of Mines. The debate is viewable here.
