A MAN found with a parcel of drugs ready to be sent to Northern Ireland had tried to disguise the cannabis smell with chewing gum.
Jamie Sweeney, aged 27, from Amroth Court in Penlan, was stopped by police as he drove along Fabian Way in Swansea.
In his car, police found a parcel of five bags of cannabis, each weighing an ounce. Their combined value was £1,000, prosecutor Paul Hobson told Swansea Crown Court.
Also found in the search was a box containing 9,145 tablets which had been divided into nine packets.
They were worth between £1,000 and £2,000, Mr Hobson said.
When police searched his home they found the remains of a “cannabis growing operation”.
Officers also found post office receipts for two other parcels of the same weight which had also been sent to Northern Ireland.
They also found evidence of cash being paid into his account.
Judge Paul Thomas, sentencing him, said in a letter written on his behalf to the court, Sweeney’s offending was described as a “moment of madness”.
He denied that saying it was a prolonged “course of conduct”.
“What’s concerning is in the last 12 months, your life seems to have been going off track. Whether it’s the fault of you taking drugs yourself I do not know but get it back on the rails quickly.”
He gave Sweeney, who admitted two offences of possession with intent, an eight month term, suspended for 12 months and told him he will have to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.
