A MAN has been found guilty of drugs offences after he became involved in a plot to smuggle cannabis.
David Lewins, 40, of The Avenue, Hetton, was convicted of conspiracy to supply a controlled drug when he appeared at Teesside Crown Court following a week-long trial.
It comes after police seized cannabis worth £20,000-plus as part of Operation Skyhawk, with a total of 13 people to be sentenced.
Lewins, the fourth man to be convicted as part of the same probe, has been remanded as a date for the sentencing hearing is arranged.
Temporary Det Insp Nicola Lawrence, of Durham Constabulary, said: “Lewins was part of an organised criminal gang who operated across the North East and the North West.
“This goes to show the lengths the police will go to prosecute everyone involved in organised crime.”
The same operation saw officers make three seizures of one kilo consignments of pure cocaine.
Others to be sentenced following a trial include Timothy Lister, 40, from Consett, found guilty of conspiracy to supply class A drug, and men from Lancashire and Leeds found guilty of money-laundering offences.
