Pro-marijuana group turns in petitions for ballot proposal in Grosse Pointe Park

A pro-marijuana group turned in a stack of signed petitions this morning at Grosse Pointe Park City Hall that were aimed at putting a ballot proposal to decriminalize pot on the city’s November ballot.

“A man’s home is his castle, and we all deserve the privacy to possess no more than one ounce for adult use only,” said Tom LaVigne, 51, a lawyer and Grosse Pointe Park resident who grew up in the city.

“Our proposal will reset police priorities to fight real crime, and we want it to start parents’ discussions with their children about why marijuana is for adults only,” said LaVigne, president of the Decriminalize Grosse Pointe Park Ballot Question Committee.

It should take less than a week to validate the petition signatures, said Grosse Pointe Park City Clerk Jane Blahut.

“They said they had 600, so that should be more than enough to put the ballot question on the November ballot,” Blahut said.

The group needed about 493 valid signatures, based on the required 5% of the last election turnout of 9,864 residents whose votes were tallied in the February school election, she said.

Pro-marijuana groups have been focusing on metro Detroti communities to change local ordinances. Already, there are five Oakland County communities that have or likely will have proposals on ballots this year — Berkley, Hazel Park, Huntington Woods, Oak Park and Pleasant Ridge.
