SPRINGFIELD – State regulatory agencies are in the midst of finalizing rules to implement Illinois’ medical marijuana law, and Illinois Senate Republicans want to know the public’s opinion.
The Senate Republican website offers these choices in its survey:
- Marijuana is a drug – not medicine – and it should be illegal.
- Marijuana has a legitimate use for pain treatment and other medical purposes and should be available for medical – but not recreational – use.
- Marijuana should be available for recreational use by adults over age 21.
- Not sure.
They also ask readers to predict how Illinois public policy will eventually end up on the issue of legalized marijuana.
Medical marijuana advocates are commonly active in polls like these, giving lawmakers a public opinion reference to back their eventual position. Also taken into consideration during the rulemaking process are comments made at public hearings, as well as direct lobbying efforts among General Assembly members of the Joint Commission on Administrative Rules, or J-CAR.
The Senate members of J-CAR are Chairrman Harmon (D), Althoff (R), Munoz (D), Rezin (R), Righter (R), Silverstein (D).
The House members of J-CAR are Chairman Schmitz (R), Harris (D), Lang (D), Leitch (R), Moffitt (R), Thapedi (D).
