No Tax Hike and No Marijuana

Voting options will be upon us in November. Polk citizens simply cannot afford to pay an additional 1 percent in general sales taxes in order to pay for increased bus service and road maintenance.

As already mentioned in Ledger articles, an increase to 8 percent sales tax will hurt businesses trying to compete within our county and will result in these business having to reduce employees.

And such a general, across-the-board sales tax increase will hurt every fixed-income retiree and certainly every lower-wage worker.

Just think of the number of things we pay sales taxes on.

Please vote no on increasing sales tax to 8 percent. This county is already poor enough.

Most of us now realize that “medical marijuana” will rapidly turn into a free-for-all, so let’s not open these gates.

We won’t need legal help to assist us.

We already know that the language of who qualifies is open for confusion. It is not limited to only those with debilitating diseases, as it should be.

Please vote no on medical marijuana. We already have enough problems with alcohol.

JERRY E. POPELKA

Winter Haven
