As a precaution, the Kauai Police Department is urging parents to inspect all the edible treats their children will be bringing in this Halloween.
This is due to the increasing popularity of marijuana-coated candy in states where the drug and drug edibles are now legal.
According to Kauai Police Chief Darryl Perry, it is not likely that a child on Kauai will receive the drug-laced treats, but it is important to be cautious and “vigilant about what’s being made available to our youngsters…”
Local law enforcement agencies are reminding residents that it is illegal to consume non-medicinal marijuana in Hawaii.
“The fact that these candies are illegal here in the State of Hawaii does not prevent it from getting into the hands of our keiki,” said Chief Perry.
According to Kauai police, marijuana edibles are not easy to recognize to the blind eye since most of them are candies off the shelf and then sprayed with hash oil. Once it dries, there is no visible distinction between normal candy pieces and the one that’s been altered.
