A man caught with cannabis shortly after smoking some of it, was convicted in his absence and fined a total of $400 when he failed to appear in Mudgee Local Court last Wednesday.

John Stuart Madden, 24, of Lawson Street, Mudgee, was charged with ‘Self administer prohibited drug’ and ‘Possess prohibited drug’.

At about 2.50am on Saturday, August 28, 2014, police were patrolling the Mudgee CBD and surrounding areas including the Flirtation Hill lookout where they saw a car parked.

They approached the car and saw Madden and another man inside who both appeared fidgety.

He said that they were “just hanging out” but police could smell cannabis and there was a smoke haze in the car.

Madden handed over a 3g re-sealable bag of cannabis from the glove box and a 1g container from the centre console.

He admitted to owning them and last smoked some about an hour earlier.
