CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. — A Cambridge couple is now facing numerous charges, including a Class D felony, in relation to last night’s arrest, but local police say, this isn’t the first time they’ve been accused of committing the exact same crime.
“I think a message needs to be sent and I think we did it again last night, we’re not going to tolerate it,” said Cambridge-Greenwich Police Chief George Bell.
After a receiving a call from local probation officers, Cambridge-Greenwich police executed a search warrant on the South Park Street home of David Juaire and Christina Stewart Thursday night.
“The odor of marijuana was overwhelming,” said Bell.
Inside, Bell says officers confiscated more than 25 fully grown plants, along with several bags of processed marijuana and equipment for growing the drug.
“We found another elaborate indoor grow room, the exact same room that was used, again, back in September 2013,” said Bell. “He actually had it piped into the furnace, the furnace for the chimney that provided heat.”
Just last fall, officers conducted a prior search of the home where they found three times as many plants. Juaire was eventually convicted of misdemeanor possession of marijuana charges and Stewart’s case was adjourned with consideration of dismissal.
“I certainly would think I’d go back and do it all over again and do it identical to what I did a year ago. I’m not sure what they don’t understand,” said Bell.
Following Thursday’s arrest, the couple was charged with unlawful growing of marijuana and third degree criminal possession of marijuana.
Bell disputes their claim they were growing the plants strictly for personal use.
“I just firmly believe they’re selling marijuana out of that house,” said Bell.
Because Juaire was on probation, Bell says it’s likely he will face additional charges, while Stewart will now likely re-face her prior charges that were adjourned.
An 11-year-old boy was home at the time of the arrest and Bell expects an endangerment of a child count to be filed as well.
