Police catch 31-year-old Sarnia man twice with marijuana during vehicle stops

A man arrested twice in two months for marijuana possession was betrayed by the drug’s odor, resulting in a $2,500 fine.

Ryan Christopher Jackson, 31, of Sarnia, pleaded guilty Friday to the Jan. 3 charge of possession of marijuana and the March 4 possession of marijuana for trafficking and violation of a court-ordered drug ban.

On Jan. 3, a Sarnia police officer stopped Jackson’s swerving vehicle. A strong odour of marijuana from the vehicle prompted Jackson’s arrest.

Jackson had two bags of marijuana weighing a total of 62 grams.

Jackson was released from custody under a drug ban.

On March 4, Jackson’s vehicle was stopped and it smelled of marijuana.

A search found two bags of marijuana in the vehicle weighing a total of 454 grams (one pound).

Jackson’s criminal record includes a recent violation of a house-arrest order.

There was a joint submission by Crown and defence lawyers for a $2,500 for the drug offences and one day in jail already served in pre-sentence custody for the order violation.

A year’s probation was imposed where Jackson must stay away from drugs and take substance abuse counselling.

Mandatory victim surcharges increased the financial penalty to $3,350.
