Public meeting dates set for Downs cannabis talks

DOWNS — Dates have been set for public meetings in regards to the possibility of a cannabis cultivation farm being placed inside the village limits of the village of Downs.

Mayor Mike James announced via the village’s email list that there would be two public meetings in regards to the possible cannabis farm that area resident Tim Jones is looking to build. There will also be a zoning board of appeals meeting, and James urged all to attend at least one of the meetings to have questions answered.

The first meeting will take place Thursday, Oct. 23 at the Tri-Valley Middle School multi-purpose room at 7 p.m. The second meeting will take place Tuesday, Oct. 26 at the same location.

The Zoning Board of Appeals public hearing regarding the proposed zoning change for the medical cannabis farm will take place 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, also at the TVMS multi-purpose room/cafeteria.

This is Jones’ second attempt at a cannabis site in McLean County, as his proposed site for unincorporated Downs was rejected by the McLean County Board a month ago.

The McLean County Zoning Board of appeals heard testimony at a September meeting from many in the area that did not want such a facility, as they said it would affect their rural way of life.

The zoning board recommended special use be allowed, but the full county board voted down the proposal overwhelmingly, saying the site would indeed alter the rural landscape.

This time, the county has no say in the matter, as the land is inside the village limit of Downs at the southwest corner of County Road 2000 East and County Road 36.

Jones is one of as many as 11 companies to file for such a facility in police district six, including sites in Pontiac, Clinton and LeRoy.

It is up to the state as to which company will be granted the bid for beginning such a facility, and the deadline for application has already passed.
