Spilled package at UPS brings cannabis charge

URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted to police he was having cannabis shipped to his home has been charged with unlawful cannabis trafficking.

Conar J. Kitt, 22, who listed an address in the 800 block of South Fourth Street, was also charged with possession with intent to deliver cannabis.

Both felony counts stemmed from an Urbana police investigation that began almost a year ago.

State’s Attorney Julia Rietz said on Nov. 7, 2013, officials at the United Parcel Service facility in Urbana notified police that a package fell off a conveyor belt, was damaged and smelled of cannabis.

Police learned that it contained two vacuum-sealed bags with a total of just over just over 7 ounces of cannabis.

The shipping label indicated it had been sent from Bakersfield, Calif., and was to be delivered to Kitt’s home.

Rietz said police made contact with Kitt, who admitted he sent money to a person in California for the cannabis. He planned to use some and sell the rest, she said.

Kitt was arrested on Friday by Urbana police. He was arraigned Tuesday and told to be back in court Dec. 2. He remains free on his own recognizance.

If convicted of the more serious charge, he faces penalties ranging from probation to four to 15 years in prison.
