Taste NY Harvest Fest: A one-stop sampler of New York state's food and drinks

Julie Ehrentraut has a small start-up business that produces relatively unusual foods in a fairly out-of-the-way place.

Andy Semabia of Better Brittle in Syracuse offers samples at the 2013 Taste NY Harvest Fest at the state fairgrounds.

Her company is Seed Born Foods of Locke, a small town in southern Cayuga County. With no money for a major ad or marketing campaign, how does she get the word out?

On Saturday, she’ll set up a booth at the Taste NY Harvest Fest at the state Fairgrounds. She’ll join more than 80 other food and beverage vendors and offer samples of her “allergy free” fudge and explain how she substitutes hemp seed milk for dairy in the process.

“It should help spread the word and let people know that my business is here offering these products,” Ehrentrout said. Seed Born Foods, which also makes hemp-based baked goods, started up in March, and Ehrentrout usually offers her products for sale at the Moravia Farmers Market and other local food events.

The Taste NY Harvest Fest (details below) offers food and beverage producers the opportunity to offer free samples and sell their wares.

On Saturday, dozens of vendors will offer everything from salsas and sauces to mustards, olive oils, spice rubs and baked goods, along with beer, wine and spirits.

Some, like Seed Born Foods, are aimed at the health-conscious, but many are not. A few — like Dinosaur Bar-B-Que and Pastabilities — are well known in Central New York, while others, like Pa’s Pistols barbecue sauce of Salem or Cross Creek Farms spices and fruit butters of Berkshire, are not.

Taste NY is a state initiative to promote the sales of made-in-New York foods and beverages. Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced plans to expand the promotions in 2015.

Ehrentrout, who also participated in a Taste NY promotion during this year’s State Fair, is happy for the chance to reach new customers.

“It’s a great way to meet a lot of people in one place,” she said.
