HAUL: Police clear a cannabis factory at the former Photocall premises in Cleethorpe Road, Grimsby.
TWO Vietnamese men have appeared in court after a large scale cannabis factory was discovered in Grimsby.
Anh Nguyen, 23, and Tuan Anh Dang appeared at Grimsby Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with the production of cannabis and the dishonest abstraction of electricity.
As reported, police raided the former Photocall shop in Cleethorpe Road, Grimsby, on Thursday morning.
The court heard just under 600 cannabis plants were discovered.
Both men spoke via a Vietnamese interpreter and gave no indications of plea.
Prosecuting, Anthony Mowbray said: “Without going into great detail, at the premises at 156 Cleethorpe Road, which had previously been a photography studio, the ground floor had been empty for some time and had been converted into a commercial cannabis farm.
“Police searched the premises on Thursday and discovered just under 600 cannabis plants.”
He said it was “plain” that the plants were being maintained “on a regular basis”.
He added that police discovered that the electrical supply to the premises “had been bridged”.
No application was made for bail by either defendant.
Mr Simpson said the case would be transferred to Grimsby Crown Court with the two men due to appear on Friday, October 31.
Both were remanded in custody.
As reported, around 13 police officers took part in the drug swoop at around 8am on Thursday.
It is just yards from the former Barclays Bank where, in a separate case, more than 1,000 plants were discovered in August with a street value of £570,000.
And in another investigation, around 250 plants were uncovered by officers earlier this year in Strand Street, Grimsby, in separate premises to the rear of the former photographic studio.
In each case it was information passed by members of the public which led to the police drugs operation.
Detectives praised the public who alert Humberside Police to their suspicions of drug production in their neighbourhoods.
