A MAN found in possession of drugs owned up on the spot, telling police he had “about a tenner’s worth”.
John Kiely was seen crouching on the ground and holding a clear bag with cannabis inside by police responding to reports of anti-social behaviour.
Police had been called to waste ground near Argyle Street, Hebburn, at about 5.45pm on May 16.
The 24-year-old was subsequently arrested for drug possession.
Kiely, of Chaytor Street, Jarrow, pleaded guilty to possession of the Class B drug at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.
Stan Sudworth, prosecuting, said: “He said the drug was his and was ‘about a tenner’s worth’.
“He was asked who the drug belonged to and said it was his own and had nothing to do with anyone else.”
Paul Kennedy, defending, said: “It was a small amount of cannabis.
“He fully co-operated with the police and explained that the drugs were his.
“He has pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.”
Kiely was given a six-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £50.
