A MAN found in a Stockton house that contained 70 kilograms of cannabis will be sentenced next week after Newcastle District Court heard that his hands were covered in cannabis resin when police raided the property.
A MAN found in a Stockton house that contained 70 kilograms of cannabis will be sentenced next week after Newcastle District Court heard that his hands were covered in cannabis resin when police raided the property.
The Flint Street home was being rented from the Department of Housing when cannabis could be smelt emanating from the premises in June last year, a statement said.
Police raided the property in June 19 and found Damien Joseph Knight and two others inside.
Knight, 43, had bits of cannabis leaf stuck to his clothing while his hands were covered in resin.
Cannabis leaf and head was found in two bedrooms and was in the process of being stripped and dried ready for distribution.
“The smell from the cannabis was overwhelming,” the statement said.
Knight, of Karuah, told police he had been sleeping on the floor for a few nights while someone else was allegedly renting the premises from the department.
The other people found in the house are before the courts.
The drugs weighed a total of 70 kilograms with Knight previously pleading guilty to supplying a commercial quantity of cannabis which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years’ imprisonment.
His barrister, Michael Weightman, said Knight had a number of matters on his criminal record, but this was the first time Knight had been jailed.
He acknowledged that Knight was motivated by profit and did not have the drug or gambling issues that people involved in large-scale drug production often have.
Mr Weightman said there was no evidence that Knight was involved in the cultivation or any actual sales of the drug.
Knight will be sentenced next week.
