A father-of-three from Beverley is not prepared to give up smoking cannabis – despite being offered help from The Probation Service.
Bryan Wilson, 32, of Brewery House Mews, has been a cannabis user since he was 17 and has previous convictions for drug offences, Beverley Magistrates heard
His latest offence was the possession a small amount of the drug which came to the attention of the police in April this year when they smelled it during a visit to his home, said Andrew Stirling, prosecuting.
He said: “The defendant said the drug was for his own use and that he had paid £20 for it. He said he used cannabis on a regular basis.”
Mitigating, John Seagrave said Wilson had been a cannabis user since he was 17 but that he was trying to cut down his usage.
He said: “He is certainly using a lot less than he did a couple of years ago.”
The court heard that Wilson was already the subject of a community order with supervision through which he had been assessed for drug rehabilitation treatment.
But a representative from The Probation Service told the court that Wilson was unsuitable for this because he had no intention of giving up cannabis.
Chairman of the bench, Mr N. Potts told Wilson: “It’s a pity you’re not engaging and reducing rather than insisting you are going to carry on.”
The defendant replied: “I’ve reduced compared to what I was smoking!”
“Well if you stay on that plain maybe that is the answer,” said Mr Potts.
The court heard that Wilson was due to receive appointments with a psychologist because of problems with his mental health.
He does not live with his children but has supervised contact with them.
Wilson, who pleaded guilty to possessing a controlled drug, was handed a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
