POLICE in Kitwe yesterday raided drug dens in which 42 suspected drug dealers and abusers were arrested.
A combined team of police and Drug Enforcement Commission officers swung into action and targeted bus stations within the central business district where drug dealing and abuse is rampant among bus drivers and conductors.
Kitwe district police officer commanding Lizzy Machina led the operation which recovered loose and packaged cannabis, as well as undetermined quantities of rock cocaine.
Machina said among those arrested were government workers.
“We have arrested 42 people in this operation. We targeted bus stations, especially the station behind the railway station. Some of the people we have arrested are government workers, but we have withheld their identities. We are now screening the suspects,” she said.
All the suspects have been detained in Nkana East Police cells where the screening process was being conducted.
Machina said all the cannabis and cocaine seized would be handed over to the DEC where its value would be determined.
She further warned that the operations were ongoing but could not disclose which areas in town would next be targeted for fear of alerting would-be culprits.
Some suspects were arrested in connection with illegal fuel trading and officers recovered containers of diesel from them.
